IRAKLION/ CHANIA / Crete

After the ferry we met at a lookout to hear about the defence of Iraklion or Heraklion during May 1941. The Australian and NZ forces held the Germans off at a couple of locations across the island of Crete from Heraklion to Xiania. But the failed at Malene on the westrern side of the island. The German's took control of the airfield and flew in reinforcements. Unfortunately the defence was badly organised and the german's forced the allied forces to retreat to Skafia on the south coast where they were evacuated to North Africa.

Willy took control of the old airport today with a few of his mates.

What a beautiful little fishing town.

Staying overnight at the local campground with fresh bread in the morning we set off for another day of adventure.
